Valentine's Day decorated chocolate sugar cookies that look like pink and red lips and mouths

My kids are still doing virtual school on Fridays. And as chaotic as you might imagine that to be with 4 kids in 3 different schools... you are probably still underestimating it. Did you know that you can velcro shredded wheat crackers?!

On the positive side, my 14 year old has mastered 3D printing as a procrastination technique. And my 7 year old has her own Pinterest account. She's now in charge of making the long list of healthy foods we should try as a family but all secretly know that we never will.

And I've just about given up going to the gym. Ever again. Even on days when all my kids are in school. You know...in solidarity...with Friday Me.

Instead, I've taken up a new sport that I like to call "Extreme Shopping." Basically, you go shopping at Target...but without a cart. It's a balance between not picking up more than you can lift, and sprinting faster to grab the rest of what you actually need before you drop everything. It's been really good cardio and I'm starting to see some real definition in my upper arm muscles. I totally recommend it for all you busy people out there.

You know what else I recommend? Making kissy lip cookies for Valentine's Day.

Chocolate decorated sugar cookies - step by step tutorial for decorating lip sugar cookies

How to make lips decorated sugar cookies:

Step 1.

Pipe a squiggle of black royal icing in the middle of the lip cookie. With a wet brush, smooth out to create a thin layer of black icing. Let dry for 15 minutes.

Step 2.

With medium consistency red royal icing and a #3 tip, outline and fill the bottom portion of the lip sugar cookie. Let dry for an hour.

Step 3.

Outline and fill the top section of the lips with the same red icing. Let dry for 8 hours or overnight.

Step 4.

Place some white food coloring and a single drop of both red and fuchsia food coloring on a plate. Mix the red and fuchsia together. With a damp brush, pick up some of the reddish coloring and paint around the outside edges of the cookie. Rinse the brush and blend the coloring back toward the outside edges. Clean up any excess coloring in the center of the lips. Add white shine lines with the white food coloring and the tip of the brush.
