Hanukkah decorated chocolate sugar cookies

I have four children. I will tell you right now each one of them is a treasure. I mean, sometimes they are the kind of treasure that you need to clean up a bit before you can really appreciate it...but I do absolutely adore them. So don't take this the wrong way when I tell you that my youngest started full day school last fall and I could NOT have been happier.

I was going to have ALL THE TIME to do ALL THE THINGS!! I was going to be productive and exercise and make super healthy, interesting dinners every night. I would keep on top of my emails and read informative books that made me re-think my entire world view. I even considered catching up on laundry.

And I definitely started down this path of unimpeded joy and productivity. I started some big projects that I had been putting off for a year or ten. And then COVID hit. And instead of having four kids at school full time, I started full time schooling four kids at home. We powered through and enjoyed the longest summer vacation ever as a reward.

This fall, my kids are back in school part time and I've NEVER been more productive than those hours when they are away learning and becoming better citizens and people.

Except...

My youngest has developed some very concerning allergies this fall.

She's decided that looking for shoes makes her back hurt. Walking home from school is bad for her legs. Learning math makes her stomach hurt and writing makes her cough. Sometimes, when she looks at the ceiling at school, it makes her head hot.

So she calls her very loving mother who very carefully explains that reading books won't make your throat hurt.

And then the teacher very carefully explains that it doesn't matter because my daughter is complaining of COVID symptoms and needs to go home....and stay there for at least 24 hours.

You guys. My six year old has figured out the system. She's decided that watching cartoons in French is her new career path. And she is not going to let anything stand in the way of achieving her dream. She hasn't attended a full week of school since September.

Luckily, the girl loves a party and this month is the celebrating-est time of the year! Between learning about and celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and National Cookie Day...we may be able to bump French Cartoon Watching. Wish me luck!

How to make Hanukkah menorah decorated sugar cookies:

Step 1.

Before baking, cut off the circle edge on the bottom of the cutter. When cookies are baked and cooled, outline and fill the entire cookie with a medium consistency white icing and a #3 tip. Immediately pipe a line of medium consistency gold colored icing down the center of the cookie with a #3 tip. Allow the cookie to dry for an hour.

Step 2.

With the gold icing and a #3 tip, pipe the branches and the base of the menorah stand. Let dry for 15 minutes.

Step 3.

Add a dot of gold icing at the top of each branch for the candle holders. Pipe a dot of gray icing on the center branch, near the top. Use a toothpick or scribe tool to pull the icing into a 6 pointed star. Let dry for 15 more minutes.

Step 4.

With a #3 tip, add blue candles to each branch. Let dry for 15 minutes.

Step 5.

Add smaller dots of gold icing to the top of each candle. Use a toothpick to pull them into a flame shape. I like to leave a little space between my candles and the flame...but you can bump them right up next to each other if you want to!
